6th Gala Concert
Canadian Museum of Civilization Theatre

East meets west in a cultural fusion that brings together the traditional and the contemporary, and features many exceptional Canadian performers. The Gala Concert showcases the artistic talents of 10 performing groups from across the pan-Asian spectrum. Performers include: the veteran Chinese Beijing opera singer William Lau portraying the female warrior; the jazzy South Asian ensemble of guitarist Adam Duncan, accompanied by saxophonist Linsey Wellman and Tabla musician Ravi Singh; the renowned Montreal Er Hu artist, Shen Qi, with the accomplished cellist Luo Di; the Upasana School of Dance, featuring contemporary classical Indian dance; Japanese Soprano Noriko Hashimoto; the Indonesian Gamelan music ensemble with a Javanese dance troupe; traditional Korean dancer Jayoon Jung; the innovative styling of Toronto’s Folklorico Filipino Canada Dance Company; Pakistani raag malkauns music ensemble (Abdul Zakir will be playing Raag MALKAUNS on banjo accompanied by his talented son (Osman Zakir ) on tabla), and Vietnamese singer Ivy O. Come and experience the colourful sights and incredible sounds that bring Canada ’s diversity to life on stage!

Parliamentarians, government officials, community leaders, and the general public are invited to celebrate the beginning of Asian Heritage Month. Hosted by the Honourable Jason Kenny, Secretary of State (Multiculturalism and Canadian Identity), and the OAHMS, the evening will include welcoming remarks, several musical and dance performances from the pan-Asian community as well as a reception.

Lecture & Demonstration about Beijing (Peking) Opera

An interactive, informative and fun introduction to the traditional art of Beijing Opera. Audiences will get hands-on experience of this total theatre which combines dancing, singing, music, acting and martial arts. Participants will receive hands-on experience of symbolic gestures, try out costumes and head-dresses, and learn how to laugh and cry in Chinese opera style. Presented by William Lau, who studied both Chinese classical dance and classical ballet, and holds a masters degree from the dance program at York University. A special event not to be missed!"

Audio-Visual Presentation on Asian Gardens

Come discover Chinese, Korean, and Japanese gardens and learn about their origins and how they have evolved. A free lecture by Claude Gagné about the origins and characteristics of classical gardens in China, Japan and Korea, and how to create a Japanese garden in the less hospitable climate of Eastern Canada. Mr. Gagne is the President of the Japanese Garden and Pavilion at the Montreal Botanical Garden, and has visited Japan 15 times and received numerous awards and honours from the Japanese Government as well as the Emperor of Japan. Internationally acclaimed pipa and guzheng virtuoso Liu Fang is known for her masterful playing. Born in China in 1974, she began studying the pipa at the age of six, gave her first public solo performance at nine, and played for Queen Elizabeth in 1985. Honoured with several provincial and national prizes and a graduate from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Liu Fang has captivated audiences and critics with the richness and grace of her playing as well as her wide ranging repertoire. Described as being "one of the greatest virtuosos", "the empress of pipa" (L'actualité, 2001).
