On April 14, the Ottawa Asian Heritage Month Society (OAHMS) held a successful Media Conference and Reception at the beautiful Chateau Cartier Resort and Conference Centre in Aylmer, Quebec, to launch the 10th annual Asian Heritage Month (AHM) in the National Capital Region. Ninety-six invited guests attended the event, including parliamentarians, city councillors, members of the Asian diplomatic corps, media representatives, sponsors, event partners, and community leaders.

The Chateau Cartier's Sales and Marketing Director, Ms. Jo-Anne Sparkes, acted as the MC. After introducing 13-year-old, award winning pianist, Ms. Anita Pari, who had performed for the invited guests, the program began with welcoming remarks by Madame Yolaine Charette (General Manager) and Dr. Alek Choo (OAHMS President). Senator Vivienne Poy (Honorary Patron) delivered an eloquent speech, which described AHM celebrations across Canada and acknowledged the lead role of Ms. Monica Wu (Co-founder) at the local level. This was followed by a PowerPoint presentation covering some memorable AHM events over the previous nine years. Long-time Director, Mr. Robert Yip then highlighted some of this year's upcoming events in May. A colourful Balinese and Javanese dance performed beautifully by Ms. Ayu Wedarini and Mr. Eko Nurcahyo, and presented by the Indonesian Embassy, concluded the program.

The guests then enjoyed the Chateau Cartier's superb three-course meal, specially selected by long-time hotelier, Mr. Otto Heberlein, and prepared under the supervision of Mr. Ritesh Purran (Executive Chef). The seasonal salad, grilled salmon, and duo of mini-chocolate mousse and mini cheesecake were delicious and beautifully presented. Under the direction of Ms. Tracy Pitts (Director of Catering)and Mr. Branko Malesevich (Maître d'hôtel), the Chaudiere Room provided an elegant setting for this memorable event. This was the first time AHM has been launched off Parliament Hill, outside the City of Ottawa, and the Province of Ontario.

This reception also provided an opportunity for our sponsors, partners and guests to display their promotional material. CBC, BMO, Minto, Ottawa Festivals, Chateau Cartier, the Canadian Museum of Nature and the David Lam Centre of Simon Fraser University all had displays, and the Ottawa Japanese

Community Association was there to collect for the Japanese Earthquake Relief Fund.

The CBC, OMNI, the Ottawa Citizen, and Embassy magazine and Seven Days News sent reporters to cover the event. CBC's Adrian Harewood, who was in attendance, introduced the evening news clip of this event on CBC television's local news. There was also coverage by the Ottawa Citizen and Embassy magazine.
